Log Cabin Star Quilt

Now that the block and border are complete, we are ready to create our quilt.

Set Up:

  1. Begin with all windows closed, except a new window.  
  2. You may open the fabric palette you were using for the blocks and borders.

Design Layout:

From the Layout menu, choose Quilt.   The Layout dialog box appears.

Block Tab:

Click Add Ring Button.  Dialog box will show "Quilt has one ring."

Click arrows for Current Ring so that it shows current ring as "0".

  1. Set Layout to: Straight.
  2. Block Count 1 Down and 1 Across
  3. Block size:  12" height and width.
  4. Block setting:  Single

Click arrows for Current Ring so that it shows current ring as "1".

  1. Horizontal and Vertical Fittings:  Specific Count, Width 4", Count 3.
  2. Block setting: Single.

 


Border Tab:

Click the Add Border button, until you have 3 borders showing.

Click arrows for Current Border so that it shows current border as "1".

  1. Border Type:  Mitered
  2. Horizontal and Vertical Fittings:  Specific Count, Width .75", Count 1.

Click arrows for Current Border so that it shows current border as "2".

  1. Border Type:  Corners.
  2. Horizontal and Vertical Fittings:  Specific Count, Width 4.0", Count 4.

Click arrows for Current Border so that it shows current border as "3".

  1. Border Type:  Mitered.
  2. Horizontal and Vertical Fittings:  Specific Count, Width 0.25", Count 1.

Sash Tab: 

  1. Not Enabled.

Click OK button. What you will see is the blank Quilt grid, which will need to be filled.

  1. Right click on the Medallion Center and from the pop-up menu select Browse Blocks.
  2. From the Classic Stars catagory, select the 1904 Star.
  3. Drag and drop the 1904 Star into the Medallion center position by pressing and holding the left mouse button as you move the icon over the center position.  Then release the mouse and the block will appear on the quilt.
  4. Locate the Log Cabin Star block, from Part 1.
  5. Drag and drop the Log Cabin Star into the Medallion Ring position.
  6. Close the browser window.
  7. Go to the Layout menu, click Affect All to remove the check mark.  If there is no check mark, then proceed to the next step.
  8. Select the 90 Rotate tool, and click on the Log Cabin Stars to position then as shown in the finished quilt illustration.  You may   use the Flip Tools to achieve the same result.
  9. Right click on any border and from the pop-up menu select Browse Borders.
  10. Select the Log Cabin Star Border, from Part II, and drag and drop into the middle border position.
  11. When the Border Fittings dialog box appears, click OK but do not make any changes.
  12. Choose the Flip Vertical Tool and flip the vertical border repeats into position as shown in the illustration.
  13. Choose the Flip Horizontal Tool and flip the horizontal border repeats into position as shown in the illustration.
  14. Paint as desired.
  15. Save the quilt by selecting Save from the file menu.
