Log Cabin Star Quilt

Part 1 of 3
Create a Block

|To see the quilt, click here.|

In this lesson we will design the block shown in the Medallion Ring with the help of the Rotary Cutter tool.

Set Up:

  1. With Quilt Pro open, go to Options.
  2. Select Screen Settings.
  3. Select Solid grid, and reduce the grid size to 0.25
  4. Set the snap to grid to on.

Draw the center of the block:

  1. Using the square tool, draw a 3 inch square.
  2. Select the Rotary Cutter tool, and cut the square into thirds vertically, as shown.  To cut the patch begin at the outside edge of the patch and proceed to the other edge of the patch.  If the patch is not "cut" afterward, try again beginning further out.

  1. Now cut the square into thirds again, this time horizontally as shown.  When finished you will have a 9 patch block.  But you aren't done yet.

  1. Continuing with the rotary cutter, cut across the middle patches of row 1 and row 3 and the first and third patch of row 2, as shown in the illustration.   Beginning from the inside of the patch cut outward, creating two triangles out of a square. You will have to take care not to make tiny cuts in the corner of the patches close to the ones you are cutting.  If you do, not to worry, just Undo and try again.

  1. Cut the short lies of the star beginning at the outside edge of the patch as shown in the illustration.  Move the rotary cutter straight toward the middle of the triangle.  Beginning at the outside edge let's you find the mid-point of the triangle much easier if the snap to grid is set.  This is because there is a grid point right in the center of the triangle.

Next we will draw the patches that make up the Log Cabin portion of the block:

  1. Draw the "log patch" of the log cabin using the rectangle tool.   Beginning with #1, in the illustration, each log patch will be 1/2" wide and as long as the block is wide.
  2. Patch #2 length is equal to width of patch 1 plus the block.
  3. Patch #3 length is equal to width of patch 2 plus the block.
  4. Patch #4 length is equal to width of patch 3 plus the block.
  5. You should have a square when the 4 logs are drawn.

  1. Follow the instructions above to add the second row of "log patches".   Use the illustration as a guide.  The patches should again be 1/2" wide and as long as the block.

  1. Follow the instructions above to add the second row of "log patches".   Use the illustration as a guide.  The patches should again be 1/2" wide and as long as the block.

Finish the block:

  • You may color the block as desired.  See Note.
  • From the Block Menu, select Save.
  • In the Filename box type in "Log Cabin Star" (without the quotation marks.)
  • The block is complete.
